Overview
Nutrition plays a crucial role in human growth, spanning adolescence, pregnant and lactating mothers, early childhood (0 to 2 years), and school age. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), recent estimates reveal that globally, 149.2 million children under the age of 5 are stunted (too short for their age), and 45.4 million are wasted (underweight for their height). A significant portion of severely wasted children resides in Asia, and approximately 45% of deaths in children under 5 are linked to undernutrition, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. Anemia, affecting young children and pregnant women globally, is estimated to impact 40% of children under 5 and 37% of pregnant women, with 30% of women of reproductive age experiencing anemia.
India has grappled with malnutrition for decades, affecting a large proportion of its population. The triple burden of malnutrition—stunting, wasting, anemia, and obesity—is prevalent across women, men, and children but is especially concerning among women and children. While the Government of India has implemented various schemes to address malnutrition, including Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), National Health Mission, Janani Suraksha Yojna, Mid-Day Meal Scheme, and National Nutrition Mission, the outcomes have not been satisfactory. The on-ground footprint and effective community engagement have proven vital in addressing malnutrition, emphasizing the need to design public interventions with a community-focused approach.
Significance
The Nutrition Center of Excellence aims to provide technical and operational support to the Government of India’s programs and campaigns, specifically targeting urgent early childhood growth issues and broader population-level nutrition challenges. Recognizing the importance of effective community engagement, the Piramal Foundation established the Center of Excellence for Nutrition to support communities and the government in achieving desired results. While the center is still evolving, it plans to develop a comprehensive community engagement program through various channels, including Anganwadi workers, Panchayati Raj Institutions, Self-help groups, youth volunteers, and local media networks, to enhance nutrition outcomes.
