Overview
The Communicable Disease (CD) team within the Aspirational Bharat Collaborative holds a distinctive responsibility. They are tasked with eliminating long standing diseases as public health problems that significantly impact lives, productivity, and resources in Aspirational Districts. These ailments, known as Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), are challenging to address due to difficulties in reaching affected communities.
The Piramal Foundation (PF) has chosen to focus on two such diseases: Visceral Leishmaniasis (Kala Azar) and Lymphatic Filariasis (Elephantiasis), prevalent in Bihar and Jharkhand where the CD team operates. The PF collaborates with existing public health programs, specifically those managed by the National Center for Vector Borne Disease Control (NCVBDC), extending support to reach Panchayat and village levels, thus acting as program partners.
Concept of CoE
To ensure program alignment and efficiency, a centralized unit is essential. The Center of Excellence (CoE) is conceived to serve as the program’s management hub, striving for optimal efficiency and excellence.
How it works
CoE members consist of existing Communicable Disease team members with expertise in various fields, including management, field operations, medicine, technical aspects, statistics, and policy/strategy. The CoE amalgamates this expertise to plan, implement, and measure impactful program activities, aiming for the fastest and most efficient path towards disease elimination. Additionally, the CoE seeks to generate knowledge about these diseases’ biology and epidemiology, given their limited research. The CoE continuously aims to enhance efficiency in tandem with the Foundation’s community-focused approach and the maximization of information technology usage.
Objectives of the CoE
Direct the operations of the Communicable Diseases team to maximize efficiency in outputs and outcomes
Formulate new policies and strategies for the disease program, ensuring support from partners to guide the program towards excellence
Innovate with newer technology and operational techniques to support the program’s journey towards excellence
Monitor and measure outputs, outcomes, and progress, allowing for the selection and strengthening of the best concepts, policies, strategies, and actions to achieve excellence in the work
